The setting: a bright blue day, when the world was new.
God: “Here, son, what do you think of this one?”
Adam: “Why’s his neck so long?”
G: “For fun!”
A: “Okay, giraffe!”
G: “Excellent. How about him?”
A: “His mane is proud. Lion!”
G: “He’s the king of beasts. We’ll set him over here, to watch. Now, what about this fellow?”
A: “Stripes! Excellent! Tiger!”
G: “Excellent indeed! He goes over here, next to the lion. Careful they don’t argue! Now, how about him?”
A: “Stripes again?”
G: “He got them from the tiger.”
A: “But he looks just like the horse from earlier!”
G: “Sure, but this fellow is a horse with stripes!”
A: “You’re repeating yourself, Dad.”
G: “Well, son, I do have a few ideas about how to do things.”
A: “Of course you do, Dad! Zebra!”
G: “Very good. Now. Here’s an interesting one for you.”
A: “Big!”
G: “Yes, very.”
A: “Hmmm… Dad, the nose. It’s just a bit awkward.”
G: “Careful, son, he has a long memory.”
A: “Okay, then, Father. Elephant!”
G: “Sounds just right. Here’s another nose for you.”
A: “Dad! This nose is even funnier. What’s he do?”
G: “He eats ants.”
A: “Does he like eating ants?”
G: “Don’t worry, he doesn’t mind.”
A: “Okay, then, Dad. Anteater!”
G: “Done. What about this little guy?”
A: “Hey, he’s wagging his tail! Dog!”
G: “Just right. I knew you’d like him. Now, let’s try some birds! …”
